Taiwan Pure-Play Internet Banks: Scorecard (H1 2026)

LINE Bank, NEXT Bank and Rakuten — an H1 2026 operating scorecard for Taiwan's three pure-play internet banks. Combined accumulated losses narrowed to NT$6.94bn, but the three diverge sharply: LINE Bank turned operationally profitable, NEXT's losses widened, and Rakuten's drop is an accounting write-off.

Method & sources

Accumulated losses, account counts, loan-to-deposit ratios and combined deposit/loan balances come from the **FSC Banking Bureau statistics released 2026-08-18** (independently relayed by CNA, Economic Daily and cnyes with matching figures), as of 2026-06-30. Each bank's H1 pretax P&L is company guidance relayed by media. Rakuten's "reduce capital by NT$2.779bn then re-inject NT$2.779bn" to write off accumulated losses (effective 2026-06-18) is corroborated by a material-information filing on Taiwan's MOPS by parent IBF Financial Holdings. **Important: accumulated-loss levels alone do not rank financial health** — Rakuten's lowest accumulated loss (NT$333m) is an accounting write-off; it still lost NT$345m operationally in H1. The only bank actually operationally profitable is **LINE Bank** (7 straight monthly pretax profits since Dec 2025). NEXT Bank's accumulated loss instead widened (NT$1.842bn a year ago to NT$2.698bn). **Per-bank deposits/loans are not disclosed individually**; only the three-bank totals (deposits NT$216.2bn, loans NT$167.6bn) and each bank's loan-to-deposit ratio are available. Three-bank totals: 3.4054m accounts (+495k YoY); combined H1 pretax loss NT$725m (narrowing 44% YoY).
